Renault R10 R8 Automatic Repair -- A deep dive into the Abyss
Просмотров 7674 месяца назад
This is the latest, and certainly most thorough repair of a Renault R10 R8 Automatic ever recorded to date. Its also the only documented repair ever recorded as well. That tester box is what made it all possible. With that, and a whole lot of trying...... I hope to write up some sort of wee how to manual for these. The factory books don't tell you anything for how to actually fix broken parts. ...

Crosley Car Barn Find First Start in 40 years
I have one of these in Canada but it has left hand drive so it must have been imported back when it was new. Plan on converting it into an EV.
That would be neat. For about 2 months I was trying to put a 3cylinder kubota diesel in this. Finally realized I'd have to hack many things up. So back to the standard engine it is
As you probably know, parts, either new or used here in the UK are plentiful! The sump, aka "oil pan" are 'ten-a-penny', well not these days, but cheap, the biggest cost will be shipping to USA. Bodyshells are about to repair the tree damage, but in the UK such damage would mean that the car would be converted to a "special". Usually a sports special, but it could be made into a "shooting brake", aka 'station wagon' or a 'woodie'. The fuel tank will contain 5 gallons, this is imperial gallons as defined by UK's measures, which is bigger than a US gallon. 1 UK gallon is 4.54 litres. I am guessing your car is 1936, the Mk I Ruby was superceded by the Mk II around July 1936 - the Mk I is much prettier of the two (also Pearls, Opals = two seater). The registration BRO 64 tells us that "RO" is the registration district and it was registered in Hertford, Hertfordshire. The series ran from 1934 to 1977, the 'B" was prefixed to expand the range of registrations, so it would have started ARO 1 and run to ARO 999, then BRO 1 to BRO 999, and so on, until 1963, when the numbers were expanded again, with a suffix "A" for 1963, "B" for 1964 and so on. Registration number stay with the car for life, but it is possible to transfer the number to another vehicle (if you were a twat and the number happened to have your initials you might want to keep it and move it vehicle to vehicle so you can tell the world what a tosser you are). If the car came back to the UK and had paperwork to prove that it was taxed under that number, then the number would be re-issued! It is not on the database, so it probably left these shores before the registration system was computerised in the late 1970's. Good luck with this iconic car - there are a few over the pond, I shall watch with interest!
@austinswallow the previous owner traded a model t for it. This car was last listed in the Austin 7 registry in 07. Yes it's a 1936, from around march. I'd guess its been locked up for many years. I've gotten distracted by other projects. I'll get back to this one soon. Next thing to do is get a set of pistons, and have the block bored. Amazingly enough, about 250 miles south of me, is a a7 body needing a home. He wants a fortune though...
@@OddCars If you need help getting parts shipped from UK to USA, happy to help, just let me know, Gary
A new project. Excellent 😊👍
Loving it
Thanks 👍
is the 2006 4 stroke? getting different answers from google.
@monopoly-hy6ol hi, this scooter was a 4 stroke. I think the years prior were 2 stroke. If you get one. Make sure it was well taken care of.
@@OddCars /Im suposed to buy one tomorrow, has just 0ver 3000km. Unfortunately I have no way of telling if it was maintained. people can lie and say they did but who really knows. 2 hour drive to get there. hopefully it turns out to be ok
bought it for $1000 canadian. bike is awsome. been driving fot 3 days with no problems. had to drive over 200km to pick up the bike in a small town. I'm sure thats why I go a good price. only has 3049km
@@monopoly-hy6ol Glad it worked out. I think mine was $700usd back in 2015. Had about 9k miles on it. Was perfect..
@@OddCars sorry to bug u again. what type of oil do u use for the engine and do u use just 10w30 engine oil for the final transmission oil as stated in the manual?
Never before have I wanted a car just to have a reason to get a vintage gear testing unit for it!
Yeah, that box might be more interesting then the car!
Niiiice ❤
My mom had an R8 Automatic in Holland, I now have a 1970 R8S
Hey you are on the correct side of the road. Hi from 🦘
When I was in Egypt in 93 these were being used as taxi cabs. I also rode in one in the Azores. Very rare here in the states.
My dad had a 1971 Renault 8 automatic here in the UK. It would sometimes get stuck in 3rd at road junctions. Also I remember him saying that switch never seemed to work. Glad you got yours going. Brings back memories as a kid.
I have a 1969 complete with two extra motors and parts sitting in my pole barn. I'm willing to sell.
Wow, im shocked there are any left. This car got cut up, and hauled away a few years ago. Only thing that held it together was the tortion bars!
These have u joints in the front axles. They often explode, or seize up at very few miles... Just saying. The upgraded axles have cv joints..
This video takes me to my chilhood when one of my uncles took all of us to a ride in his red Crosley, with a Ford 60 hp V-8 engine inside. The car was similar to this one, but not hard top, I presume was the convertible version, 1947.
La 504 a été un excellent modèle de Peugeot.
amazing job :)
Well, you fixed it, I think. It does work nicely with the dash switches. The testing and troubleshooting was amazing to watch. 🏆
Thanks for sharing your journey on this! I have always been fascinated with automated manual transmissions and how poorly they have always worked. You have an amazing amount of patience for sure.
cutting edge French technology
Geepers, that stuff is grubby. I’d be scared to get the dirt inside. Good on you for fixin it.
I liked it too much to let it sit....:)
Back when French cars were really.... FRENCH <3
The R10! 4 fully independent suspensions as well as 4 disc brakes, a nice push rod 4 banger (1108 cm3?) and the engine behind the rear wheels, like the 911 Porsche. A very reliable and funny car to drive. I owned a R8 Major decades ago and I can say it was a well built car, honestly manufatured. Thanks to revive this astucious Renault.
Old cars and automatic transmissions. ☠
Usually older Automatics are fantastic. Its when they combine electricity, metal powder as a clutch, shifter motors, and design a brand new system.. This creates problems. Now Subaru years later used a powder clutch CVT automatic.. They got the kinks out.
I had one of these in the UK mid 80s. The box had symptoms like yours We took the cover off the relay cover in the bonnet, saw nothing obvious. We replaced the cover and it started working, it ran fine for 2 years until the rust got it.
It is a very intricate mechanism and obviously great in theory. The Jaeger engineers must have been proud of their work I think. I wonder if anything similar was the inspiration.
Thats a good question. I'm certain they had simpler ideas, but couldn't use them for several reasons(like patents). The VW Autostick was a much simpler design-but German. Since they were French, they had to do it their own way. This was back in a time, when companies dared to be different!
@@OddCars Yes, I agree, something interesting for the buyer. 😊
I read about the terrible rust problems the Renault Dauphine had that probably made a big contribution to the poor reputation of Renault in the USA. The writer, who lived in New York, said the cars were lucky to survive one salty winter before the body looked like a paper doily and he swore you could actually hear it rusting. Even in a non snowy country like Australia, where Renaults were popular, you never see them. A terrible shame because they are interesting and different. Having said that, this transmission is mad. 😄
This has no rust, and about 17k miles. They are made of super thin steel, so if rust sets in- its over. The screwball transmission saved this one...
@@OddCars A blessing in disguise.
No, I am not going to buy this car
But Sir, The Advertising of the day said you would be foolish not to own one.....This was followed by a nice apology for previous bad models.

Hi i picked up a 1950 Crosley a couple months ago i was wondering if you still have your Crosley ??
Hi, no I found that a new home in late 2022.
I hope you are going to show us once you have it all cleaned and working properly. It's very interesting.
Those Crosleys are cute. I hope you restore it to some semblence of its former "glory."
Non trovo le molle valvole xd3
I was fascinated as a younger person by these. I had no idea how they worked. Thinks for posting and all the enlightening comments.
The tire shop I worked at picked up a used one similar to this in 1990. It used a strobe attachment that flashed on the tire, the sensor was held to the suspension with a magnet. The more out of balance, the longer the strobe was lit. When it was close to being balanced, the strobe was shorter and you could start to read the writing on the tire as it spun. similar to using a timing light.
Grew up with crosleys dad has a bunch of them and probably enough parts to build a few more lol
Is this the one on Craigslist?
Yep, small world isn't it.
@@OddCars I saw your ad and searched YT to learn more about those cars, especially the automatic and then found your videos. Looks like you've done a lot to it. I'd like to have a Dacia 1300 (Renault R12)
@youtoobe169 Funny you say that. I nearly got a Skoda. That looked like this r10.
And one more thing...be sure to use only 75EP gear oil in the transmission. ATF is a no no, and heavier oils will cause delayed shifting in cold weather. Cool cars.
The function of the city hi way switch was simply to lower the downshift into first gear from 9 to 7 mph. Customers complained about the lurch on the earlier ones because the downshift into first at 9 seemed abrupt. Great that you got it running!
Why not put the cam cover on before you start it.
Why not put the cam cover on before youstart it.
Looks like a lucas distributor on an A series BMC, Sprite, MG, Austin 7, Mini, etc
Austin 7 wasn't metric
Those little engines could be hopped up pretty easily.
It is really easy to convert to negative ground.
Yeah, though I never found the need to. This little car charged, started, stopped, and ran just fine. I drove it around for quite awhile. Top speed of 45mph.... As the mechanical parts go, its very interesting. Driving it on modern roads, not so much. There is a good reason most people just leave these sitting as conversation pieces!
Looks like a pretty clean car overall.
my father had two Familiale one after the other, 2.0 96 hp, good memories
Don’t let the balancer slow down or stop keep it at a steady speed. Mark the lug nuts & studs so if you remove the wheel you can put it back in the right place
